Is a medical absolutely necessary?

A medical is only necessary when requested by the insurance company.

They will only normally request a medical if you have existing health issues that cannot be resolved by a report from your GP or if you have applied for an especially high sum of insurance.

Most people do not require a medical, because in most cases the insurer is happy to make a final decision based on the information provided on your Application Form.

If the insurance company decides that further information is required, they have three alternative courses of action:

  • They can contact your GP and ask for further information. They will ask your permission first before going ahead with the request. This is the most common course of action.
  • They may send a medical representative to see you at home, ask you some questions and make an assessment of your health.
  • They may ask you to visit your GP or another Doctor for a medical.

In any case, the Life Insurance company always picks up all the costs involved.

Unfortunately obtaining further medical information will inevitably slow down your application.

Don't be tempted to lie in your application form, if you don't disclose something, or you don't tell the whole truth, any claim could be invalidated by the insurance company.
