Once I've got my quote, what's the next step?

If you are happy with your quotation and you decide to go ahead with the insurance - you'll need to fill in an Application form.

In order to obtain your initial quote, you'll only have provided your date of birth, your sex and whether you smoke. From this brief information, the insurance company can tell you how much they'd charge so long as your health is OK, your blood family has no history of ill health, you have a generally healthy life style and do not have a hazardous job.

In order to check out all these different aspects, you will have to complete a detailed Application form. Your broker will assist you in this but usually, it only takes ten minutes or so on the phone. Sometimes your broker will prefer you to complete it yourself, in which case they will post it to you.

When you're completing the Application Form, read every question carefully. Then answer fully and truthfully. Do not be tempted to be "economical" with the truth or give misleading answers. Unfortuneately, many people do as the insurance company invariably catch them out if a claim is made.

If you need the insurance cover in a hurry because, for example, it is a condition of your mortgage, make sure you complete the application by phone. Then, so long as your health etc is fine, you could have cover in place almost immediately.
